7 Reasons Your Heater Isn’t Working and How to Fix It

It’s been a chilly winter in Northwest Arkansas, causing heaters to become increasingly important. If you are experiencing heating issues, we have good news for you… There may be a straightforward fix! If not, Absolute Heat & Air is here to provide heating repair services from Fayetteville to Sonora to Bella Vista and everywhere in between.

Here are some of the most common reasons your heater might not be working:

Thermostat Settings

The reason your heater isn’t working might be a simple fix. Perhaps your thermostat is mistakenly set to “Cool” instead of “Heat,” or the AM/PM settings are mixed up, causing the system to run at the incorrect time. Check the settings and try raising the temperature a few degrees. If your heater still isn’t working, it may be time to pick up the phone and call Absolute Heat & Air.

Clogged Air Filter

Your air filter cleans the air that is circulated through the HVAC system. Dirty filters restrict airflow, making it harder for the system to circulate warm air. So, if you haven’t changed your air filter in the last 3 months, this could be causing potential heat issues.

Ductwork Leaks

Leaky ducts allow warm air to escape before it reaches your living spaces, reducing efficiency and effectiveness. Seal any visible leaks in your ductwork using duct tape or mastic sealant. Schedule a service with Absolute Heat & Air for a more thorough inspection and repair.

Clogged Heater Core

A clogged heater core can block coolant from passing through, limiting the heat transferred to your home. Cleaning a heater core can be complex, so we recommend leaving this task to our experienced technicians.

Pilot Light or Ignition Issues

If the pilot light or ignition system fails, the heater won’t be able to produce heat. This is a common issue in older models. Check if the pilot light is lit. If not, relight it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. For ignition systems, you may need professional repairs.

Bad Wiring:

Faulty wiring can disrupt the electrical flow needed for your heater to operate, leading to sudden shutdowns or inconsistent performance. Avoid attempting to fix wiring issues yourself, as they can be dangerous. Call Absolute Heat & Air to safely diagnose and repair the problem.

Lack of Maintenance

Your heating system is mechanical in nature. With the presence of moving components within the unit, wear and tear is definitely not avoidable. Keeping your system well lubricated and keeping the degradation of moving parts under control is the only way to prevent the event of a breakdown and the need for a heating repair.
