Five Tips To Save On Cooling Costs This Summer

The United States uses more air conditioning than all other nations combined with 84% of all homes using some kind of AC and costing $29 billion on an annual basis. That said, if you’re looking to save on cooling costs this summer, you certainly aren’t alone.
Save more with these tips:

1. Service Your AC

You know what they say, a regularly maintained air conditioner is an efficient air conditioner!
Various parts of your AC require regular cleaning and maintenance. Keeping your filters and coils free of dirt, pet hair, and other debris ensures good air movement and proper drainage of condensation while also improving the overall efficiency of your unit.

2. Install A Smart Thermostat

If you’ve been hesitant about moving to a programmable smart thermostat, consider this your sign to switch.

Smart thermostats offer much more convenience than a general thermostat would and they have the potential to save you money on your heating and cooling costs. Studies have shown that with their various customizable and programmable features, smart thermostats can reduce cooling costs by 15% in most residences.

3. Cover Your Windows

The heat from the sun can warm your home considerably, which may be nice during cooler weather but it’s not typically what we want during the spring and summer months. Curtains are an easy, popular fix but other options include window screens, shutters, and solar screens.

4. Utilize Your Ceiling Fans

Ceiling fans circulate air in the room by pushing it down. While utilizing a fan won’t actually reduce the temperature of a room, it does provide comfort in warmer weather by creating a slight wind chill effect that helps lower your body temperature. That said, if you’re looking to lower energy costs, make sure you’re only using your fans if you’re in the room as leaving them on in empty rooms will not work to lower the room temp.

5. Switch To A New System

Replacing your old air conditioner with a newer, more energy efficient unit is an effective way to reduce cooling costs.

In fact, did you know that at 12 years old, your AC unit is past its mid-life point, and that even if your air conditioner is only 10 years old, you can save up to 40% of energy costs with a newer unit?

In addition to updating your unit, correct installation is critical for optimal performance, so hiring the right company for your install is just as vital as the unit you choose.
