Signs You Need To Repair Or Replace Your AC

Not to be dramatic, but is there anything worse than sitting at home with a damaged air conditioning unit Googling “Is my AC broken?” or “Emergency AC repair company”? At best, a failing air conditioner is uncomfortable. At worst? A serious health risk. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for signs that your unit is damaged or in need of replacing. We’ve gathered up a few to get you started.

1. It’s Blowing Hot Air Or No Air

The spring and summer months are upon us, and no one wants to be stuck at home with a broken or poor performing AC unit. If your system is blowing hot air or little to no air, it can indicate a broken compressor, a refrigerant leak, or a damaged air duct.

2. Loud Or Unusual Noises

Sure, your air conditioner will make a bit of noise, but if you hear grating, grinding, scraping or other loud and unusual sounds, be sure to take note and call in a service request.

3. Strong Or Funny Odors

The air from your unit should not have any sort of noticeable smell. A strong, pungent smell can indicate that the wire insulation is burned and needs replacing. On the other hand, a musty or stale smell is a sign that there is mold in your AC system and requires servicing as soon as possible so as not to put your family’s health at risk.

4. Leaks

Anytime your AC unit is leaking, regardless of substance, it’s vital that you reach out to a professional for evaluation and, if necessary, repair. Best case scenario, a tube is blocked or damaged. Worst case scenario, your AC is leaking a substance known as refrigerant which if ingested is poisonous.

5. Higher Electric Bill

A skyrocketing electric bill, especially in warmer months, is often a sure sign that your system has become inefficient and is in need of repair. It’s possible that your unit just needs a good cleaning or tune up, but in some instances it might mean it’s time for an updated system.
